available for demonstrations and lessons

HOME PAGE

Describing himself as a very late starter Derek took up painting in 2003 whilst awaiting a life saving heart by-pass operation. Taking to the activity he used it as a therapeutic tool in aiding his recovery and his interest has gained momentum since that time. He has developed his own style following workshops and courses with several professional artist including amongst others David Bellamy, Geoff Kersey and Terry Harrison.

His preferred medium is watercolour and preferred topic is landscapes. More recently he has produced several paintings using coffee as an unusual medium.

Derek divides his time between his home in Skipton, North Yorkshire, where he is Vice Chairman of the Cononley Art Group, and the Nature Coast of Florida, where he is a member of the Beverly Hills Art Group, the Citrus County Art Center and the Citrus Watercolor Club. He has exhibited and sold paintings in both countries and achieved first prize in the Beverly Hills Art Group Annual Exhibition. Derek along with his wife Terry were featured artists at the Chronicle Gallery in Inverness during 2008 and the Citrus County Art Center in 2009. He has demonstrated in both countries and is particularly in demand for his demonstrations using coffee. He is available for demonstrations and lessons.

Formerly an outdoors activity instructor Derek has been used to breaking down activities into easily understandable and achievable elements in order for students to progress, whilst at the same time making them enjoyable. This he feels is an essential ingredient to any course of lessons. He brings this ability to his classes in watercolour and coffee painting.

Derek's wife Terry (Theresa) also took up painting around the same time and she has a page of her paintings on this site as well.
Derek's work can be seen at the Bath Coffee Festival 15th/16th May 2010 where he will be demonstrating his work on the Main Stage at 2:00 pm on the 15th May.
